This month’s Bright Spot comes from Barbara Rizzo, a Special Education teacher at Ossining High School who has been attending the RSE-TASC Forum, a group developed by educators who exclusively serve students with more severe developmental and intellectual disabilities.

Evaluation and Identification of ELLs with Learning Disabilities – April 2018

This month’s Bright Spot comes from the Mamaroneck School District, which has been working with the RSE-TASC Bilingual Special Education Specialist, John Boniello, on building systems to improve the evaluation and identification of ELLs who are suspected of having disabilities.

Preschool PBIS/Pyramid Team Training – March 2018

This month’s Bright Spot comes from staff in the preschool programs at the Association for Children with Down’s Syndrome, Alcott School, Hudson Valley Cerebral Palsy and the Children’s School for Early Development who have been attending the Preschool PBIS/Pyramid Team training with RSE-TASC Preschool Behavior Specialist Erin Leskovic.

Explicit Direct Instruction – February 2018

This month’s Bright Spot comes from staff at the Mount Pleasant Cottage, Summit, Hallen, Hawthorne Cedar Knolls and Clarkstown schools who attended a three-day training on Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) facilitated by RSE-TASC Non-District Specialists Fran Fernandez and John McCabe.

Training for Teaching Assistants – January 2018

This month’s Bright Spot comes from a team of teaching assistants (TAs) and administrators in the Rockland BOCES special education programs who worked with Francesca Fernandez and Nicole Scariano, RSE-TASC school improvement specialists, to design and deliver a training for TAs to promote understanding of IEPs, roles and special education regulations.

Explicit Direct Instruction – December 2017

This month’s Bright Spot comes from teachers from Katonah-Lewisboro, North Rockland and Irvington who attended a two-day training on Explicit Direct Instruction with RSE-TASC specialist, Ann Narcisse. One of the many strategies they learned was the use of “non-volunteers”.

Successfully Navigating the Transition Process – November 2017

This month’s Bright Spot comes from Karen Gatto, Director of Pupil Personnel in Croton-Harmon.  In the past few years the district has helped students successfully exit from the 12:1:2 high school Special Class.

RSE-TASC Year-End Survey – October 2017

This month’s Bright Spots again come from our year-end survey.  This time we looked at the responses of the teachers and administrators from multiple districts, including Carmel, Port Chester, White Plains, New Rochelle, Southern Westchester BOCES, Byram Hills, Eastchester, Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES, Dobbs Ferry, Putnam Valley and the PARC Preschool, who attended the RSE-TASC Student-Directed IEP series last year.
