Ask the ‘TASC #9: We often acknowledge kids who have difficulty following the rules when they demonstrate appropriate behavior, and we acknowledge kids who always follow the rules less. How can we balance it out so all kids get more recognition?

This is, understandably, a common concern among staff. It is certainly important to recognize those students who are doing what they’re supposed to be doing, so you’ll want to make sure it is explained to staff that tickets/tokens/rewards are for everyone, not just students who require additional support. That said, I’m not sure that “balance” is necessary...

You’re right!  High school PBIS is different than elementary school PBIS.  And… you’re right again!  High school PBIS is similar to elementary school PBIS.  Let’s start with what we know to be consistent across all ages: the why; i.e., the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional outcomes we want every student to achieve.  From there we develop and implement the necessary systems and practices to achieve those outcomes...

Ask the ‘TASC #7: What is a “replacement” behavior? How do I identify an appropriate one? 

This is a question that comes up a lot and one reason I think it can be confusing is that the term “replacement behavior” is used in multiple ways. Sometimes, in the context of PBIS, we talk generally about replacement behaviors for problem behaviors that we are seeing in large numbers throughout a school or program. On the other hand, we also talk about replacement behaviors in the context of problem behaviors exhibited by individual students.
